The Swiss Archive of the Performing Arts (SAPA) Foundation has been able to import into Wikimedia Commons a thousand images under an open license by Swiss theater photographer Fred Erismann (1891-1979) thanks to the support of Wikimedia CH’s GLAM programme, the work of Léa Lacroix and Nicolas Vigneron. The historic documents are at your disposal under “Category:Fonds Erismann (SAPA-A-1553)”. This project is part of the SAPA Foundation’s program to open up data relating to the performing arts in Switzerland.
The subject of this batch of images is the theatrical productions of the Stadttheater Bern between 1933 and 1968. The images belong to the Fred Erisman archive (call number: A-1553) held by the SAPA Foundation. The collection comprises some 40,000 images in negative form, divided into over 750 production files. A selection of a thousand representative images from each production was made, which were then digitized and positively transformed. This major project was made possible thanks to the generous support of the Memoriav association, the Burgergemeinde Bern, the City and Canton of Bern, the Ursula Wirz-Stiftung and the Charlotte Kerr Dürrenmatt-Stiftung.
The import work in Wikimedia Commons was completed by updating the Wikidata records of the corresponding theatrical productions. Links to the images were also added. The Wikidata records had been created during a previous import.
