Wikimedia CH has signed the Open Heritage Statement, a global call to action launched by the Open Heritage Coalition (previously known as TAROCH), convened by Creative Commons. The Statement is open for signature by organisations and institutions worldwide.

The Statement defines shared values, highlights key challenges and establishes action-oriented priorities to address the global disparity in equitable access to cultural heritage. The objective is to facilitate a global dialogue, leading to an international framework on open heritage, while also supporting UNESCO’s ongoing efforts in the areas of cultural rights, digital transformation, and knowledge sharing for sustainable development.

The Open Heritage Statement calls for equitable, open access to cultural heritage, making worldwide cultural wealth available to all. This is why it aligns so well with the values of Wikimedia CH and the wider Wikimedia movement. The Statement is not just a document; it is a global call to action to dismantle the barriers that prevent global learning, creativity, and knowledge sharing.

The Open Heritage Statement: A Global Call for Unrestricted Access to Cultural Heritage in the Digital Age

By signing the Statement, Wikimedia CH joins many other Wikimedia chapters in showing that open heritage in the public domain is a shared priority. Our commitment to this global call is deeply rooted in our identity and our various programmes (GLAM, Education, and so on). Therefore, this signature encapsulates our core values and our 2026 slogan: ‘Knowing what connects us’.

While this movement is gaining momentum globally, we have noticed that many Swiss institutions haven’t yet voiced their support. We strongly encourage galleries, libraries, archives, and museums (GLAM) across Switzerland to join us.
