Following the roundtable “Collective Intelligence vs Artificial Intelligence”, co-organised by Wikimedia CH, Open Future and IMD Business School Lausanne, the full report with key insights has been published.

On 4 November 2025, this roundtable addressed a simple but urgent question: what happens to the Wikimedia Movement when AI stops merely reading Wikipedia and starts replacing it as a key interface to knowledge?

The report describes the current moment as a « Peak Wikipedia » turning point. Wikipedia is now widely used by both humans and machines on a massive scale. However, early signs of disintermediation are emerging as AI services increasingly provide direct answers that users previously found on Wikipedia. This could lead Wikipedia to become an « invisible layer » of the AI ecosystem. It would be heavily used for training data and as a live endpoint but less directly visited by people. This shift could have implications for editors’ fundraising and the long-term sustainability of Wikipedia.

If you would like to explore the topic of artificial intelligence in greater depth and take a closer look at the concept of intelligence as a whole, we invite you to watch the second video in our ‘Next 20’ series.
