“With books and screens for a future rich in knowledge” is the title of a new Wiki-workshop in libraries.
This is Wikimedia CH’s contribution to the book “Treffpunkt Demokratie: A Handbook for Libraries as a Force for Democracy” by our partner Faktor D, which was published on 8 October in German. Through this guide how to organise Wiki-workshops, featured in the Democracy Guide for Libraries on page 126, Wikimedia CH is supporting efforts to strengthen libraries as places of encounter, political education and active democracy.
Many people lack sufficient digital skills to recognise and evaluate reliable online information. At the same time, regional stories and quieter voices are less visible and heard. This is where Wiki workshops come in: through collaboration between libraries and Wikipedia projects, democratic culture is strengthened by making relevant, source-based knowledge accessible, inviting active participation and empowering people to take an informed part in public discourse. In a nutshell, it’s about
- participation and co-creation
- media literacy
- diversity, inclusion, anti-discrimination and the empowerment of marginalised groups.
The initiative is open to all interested libraries and their users.
This and many other resources are available to download from the Democracy Guide. The printed version can be ordered from the Open Society Initiative’s online shop or directly from Faktor D. The official launch event will take place on 18 November.
