WikiPortraits is a global photography initiative delivering high-quality, freely licensed portraits of celebrities for use by Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons, and the world. They are powered by a network of over 200 volunteer photographers. Wikimedia CH is among the partners and funders. On their website they say that more than 1 out of every 50 pageviews on Wikipedia globally now features a WikiPortraits photo.
Last year at the Locarno film festival they uploaded 961 photos, of which 176 were used across 458 pages on 82 wikis. Those images received over 23 million views. The top single viewed photo was Jackie Chan, which received more than 13 million views.
In 2026 they covered this famous film festival again. Discover the images on Wikimedia Commons or on WikiPortraits’ website.
