With the rise of large language models (LLMs) and generative AI that are reshaping the entire knowledge ecosystem and the world wide web as we knew it, the Wikimedia movement urgently needs a mission to secure its agency in the emerging AI knowledge ecosystem, before the terms of that ecosystem are locked in without it.

In the past few months, several stakeholders of the open knowledge ecosystem, in particular Wikimedia CH and the Open Future Foundation, worked on identifying the main challenges faced by the Wikimedia movement and offering a roadmap to update Wikimedia policies, shape the knowledge governance norms in favour of the Knowledge Commons and build the necessary infrastructure tools.

Our proposal is to define an AI mission, supported by a cluster of organisations and communities, in a decentralised and collaborative spirit. The proposal is presented in a white paper.
