The internet travel guide Wikivoyage, a sister project of Wikipedia, is presenting the Swiss city of Zug as its travel destination of the month for November 2024. The article about Zug will be briefly described and linked on the German Wikivoyage homepage for a month.

Zug replaces the previous destination ‘Hurghada’. In December, ‘Sharm el-Sheikh’ will follow. The prerequisites for selection are that the location has tourist potential and that the associated article is as complete as possible. Destinations that have been selected since 2006 fall into the following three categories (with the selected articles for November 2024):

  • Destination of the Month: Zug
  • Travel Topic of the Month: Budapest Thermal Baths
  • Destination off the Beaten Track: Wesertal

Wikivoyage, like the better-known Wikipedia, is a collaborative project, which means that anyone can participate if they just have the courage to click on the edit button. The project was founded in Germany in 2006 and has been the travel-oriented counterpart to the online encyclopaedia since January 2013. Articles are now written in 26 languages.

As of 1 November, the English language version contained 32,814 articles and the German version 20,494 articles on (almost) everything travellers need. The most significant difference to Wikipedia is that Wikivoyage mainly provides practical knowledge for travellers. This has now also made the project interesting for SEO professionals in city councils and tourism companies.

The Swiss focus to date has been

  • Destination of the Month: Zurich, St. Moritz, Schaffhausen, Zermatt, St. Gallen
  • Travel topic of the Month: World Heritage in Switzerland, Eating and drinking in Switzerland, Schanfigger Höhenweg, Glacier Express,
  • Off the beaten track: Appenzell Ausserrhoden, Tschiertschen and Diessenhofen.
